Historic California rainstorms that primarily fell during the week of February 4th, 2024, lasted several days and dampened brick and mortar sales throughout the state. Weather Impact on California Weekly Brick & Mortar Sales

The weather system wreaked havoc on consumers who rarely see rain, and its effect on the economy was amplified due to the bulk of the precipitation falling on the weekend. Weak California sales could send ripple effects throughout the economy as the state has accounted for roughly 14% of total card sales in the last 12 months, according to CE data.

Streaming Spend Growth & Market Share Shifts

Consumers pulled back their spending in key industries during the week of February 4th and Department stores, Full-Service Restaurants and Sporting Goods, Hobby, Toy & Game, underperformed the overall country by 5.5%, 2% and 2.5%, respectively.
